The Westminster Shorter Catechism begins with a simple but profound question: “What is the chief end of man?” The answer is: “Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy Him forever.”
These words remind us that our lives are not ultimately about ourselves. We were created by God and for God. Our purpose is to bring Him glory in everything we do – to reflect His character, honour His name, and make Him known to those around us.
Glorifying God isn’t reserved for Sunday mornings or great acts of service. We glorify Him in the ordinary things: in how we speak to our families, how we treat others, how we respond when life is difficult, and how faithfully we carry out the responsibilities He has given us.
And wonderfully, glorifying God is not a burdensome duty. The Catechism reminds us that we are also made to enjoy Him forever. There is joy in knowing our Creator, trusting Him, walking with Him and discovering that He is sufficient for every season of life.
Jesus said, “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father.” — Matthew 5:16
